Question of the Week

Is There Proof of the Existence of a Soul?

Dear Rabbi,

Ever since the death of my brother seven years ago, I have been grappling with the concept of the soul. I wish I could believe in it. I am the type that needs rational arguments to convince me, and it seems the soul is too abstract for my mind. I know these things can't be scientifically proven, but do I have to resort to blind faith to believe in the soul?

Answer:

The pain of losing a loved one is so deep because it is so final. You can never replace a person whom you have lost.

But what if you could?

Imagine it were possible to clone your late brother. A genetically identical replica could be created who talks, thinks, looks and smells precisely the same as the person you grew up with. Furthermore, what if scientists developed a way to preserve and replicate memory? They could take your late brother's memories and insert them into his clone. You could sit with your newly recreated brother and reminisce about childhood experiences and laugh at the good old days, sharing a bond that only brothers can.

Would you opt for this? Would you be satisfied with an exact copy of your brother? Would his death be reversed when you met his clone? Would it end your pain?

I can't imagine the answer could be yes. I can't imagine anyone would truly believe that a clone could replace a brother or sister, son or daughter, parent or spouse or best friend.

But why not? Why would a refurbished model be any different from the original?

Because something is missing. This is not your brother. He may have your brother's voice and your brother's expressions, your brother's manner and mind and memory, but he doesn't have your brother's soul. It just isn't him.

That's what soul is. It is what makes you, you. It is the fragment of G‑d that makes each one of us unique. Above your body, beyond your personality, transcending genetics and even deeper than memory is the core of your being, the ineffable essence that is you. We call this your soul. It is soul that makes each person irreplaceable. And it is your brother's soul that you miss.

You don't need scientific proof of the soul, neither do you need blind faith. You know it to exist just as you know your own existence. You can choose to ignore it, or to remember it constantly. Sometimes you can even feel it. And at those moments when you feel your soul, you will feel your brother's soul too.

Soul
As I understand it, the soul is the emotive properties of matter. For example, you can take a picture of something, and it will either look sad or happy. One of the first email I read from www.chabad.org was on how their is spirituality in matter, even a rock. Aaron tapped a rock for water. This was probably a well (beneath the surface). It was water's soul that quenched thirst, but the ability to locate this well was due to reading the surface of rock, an ability of Aaron to know earth in an intimate way.

Souls, Religion, and Deity
Well Free Man, seems as though your comments have caused the most strife, lol:) I enjoy reading comments, but usually only comment myself if compelled to do so. It was the statement "Belief in nonsense such as the soul and any sort of deity has only held the world back and produced strife," that caught my attention. Religious belief in there being order underlying the natural world propelled scientific discovery and progress- Newton actually wrote more about theology than science. To say belief in the soul has only produced strife is naive at best. Civilization as we know it, the promotion of non-violence, and the teaching of compassion do not exist because of people who believed in no soul. Just ask the millions murdered by atheistic regimes within just the last century how the belief in no soul is working out for them. . . well, you could ask if they were still alive anyway. You have the right to your beliefs- just remember there is still much unknown about the "physical brain."

soul
The proof of the existence of a soul is right before us. We are more than an accidental configuration of protoplasm encased in cell membranes functioning in concert. We have been created by G-d with more than just biological functions; we have been endowed with empathy and other emotions which is very hard to explain as the mere firing of selected cells in our brain. I am very comfortable in recognizing this attribute in me as something special, and it could be defined as a soul.

soul
Recently I drove through the great city in America: Cleveland.
on the radio I heard 93.1 playing wonderful music--very lively and genuine sound.
I said to mshelf "this must be soul music" we don't have a station like that in LA where I live.
But the soul is more than a groove.
IIn fact, thee are times I can actually sense the presence of my soul--it is my true self, the higher part of me who guided by spirit is not interested in my excuses for being selfish but wants to guide me on to "higher" inspirations. That little inner voice that say "No, go ahead and do that kind deed you thought of" it's good.
or the one that said to me recently when i was making plans "Don't lie to me"
This little voice is of my better self or my soul
When one experiences loss and suffers it is necessary to draw closer to Psalms and prayer to regenerate that soul
recently I found music that revived me and my soul was quite happy.

Is there soul? - scientific proof
Before reading on the answer, I thought that Mr. Aron Moss would qoute from Bereshit 2:7 where the Torah says "...blowed ito his nostrils."
Any stronger proof than that?
I have read (years ago) that scientists found out that a body weighs 21 grams less just after death. Can one accept this a proof? Does one need such a proof?

the soul as energy
I didn't like the explanation either . It wasn't "scientific" . All matter is the conversion of pure energy _ Liebnitz , Einstein ect , ect . Our DNA is now known to express itself to give off it's particular changes , not just a string of codes . Energy is eternal , indestrutable and non physical . What does that sound like ??? All physics is a product of meta physics . Look it up in modern science books , or the good/awesome old Torah . A non believing scientist should be an oximoron , I think .

Not so Simple
While I believe in the soul, I would like to take issue with your cloning example. I believe that given the scenario you describe it is quite possible to convince yourself that the clone is the same person. And why not? Who is to say that the clone does not possess the same soul? In fact, it's a concept discussed at length in works of science fiction. I don't know if it's possible to "know" that a soul exists. Perhaps persons on a higher spiritual level than I can feel it, so your example may work perfectly for you, but I don't think it works for everyone.

Dear " No Soul"
and why...please tell, is your "scientific brain," here on this particular website, informing ALL of your belief?
What was it that drew your attention and peaked your curiosity to follow this link and read this article. Surely if you have ALL the answers to life's questions you would not need to bother yourself with such mundane matters.
Unless you're "soul's purpose" is to seek and destroy others who do belive, to which we all have prewarned by people of such faith long before you were even a though in your parents mind.
This is not our first rodeo...

Please ask your state (NYC) what you should do next as THEY are your "free thinkers" who tell you what is good and what is evil. You are not truthful when you claim to "live or think freely"

No Soul Guy
Why are you on a religious site if you are so confident in your beliefs.

To Free Man: a blind person can tell himself he can see a million times and it won't give him sight. A person who tells himself there is a spiritual dimension feels it, understands it, and experiences it a little more every single time. Just because you've dulled your sense of spirituality and walk around blind doesn't give you the right to tell those that can see and feel it that it doesnt exist.
If you were truly a man of truth(which is really at the heart of science), you would test this as you would any other theory, and afterwards you can make a definitive statement.
